HERB BALFOUR,
VE3OHH
Finbar O'Connor of Ireland recently wrote the following to a
group of longwave DXing enthusiasts.
Herb Balfour was a longtime member of the Ontario DX Association and
authored a number of articles that we published over the years. We join
with Finbar, Steve Canney and the many other radio friends of Herb, to
mourn his passing.
Harold Sellers
To members of the NDB List
I am extremely sad to have to inform you of the
news that Herb Balfour VE3OHH passed away
on the 29th of May 2011.
Herb had a long interest and involvement
with LF and MF experimentation and
was the publisher of the magazine Northern
Observer, for several years, which covered the
field of Part 15 LW beacons and associated interests.
Both he and the late Jim Ericson strongly promoted
and helped others in developing their own stations
and reception capabilities.
Eventually the Northern Observer was absorbed into
the long running Lowdown magazine published by
the the Long Wave Club of America (
LWCA).
His passion for radio remained undiminished up
until his untimely death.
Our thoughts are with his wife and family at
this difficult time.
May he rest in peace.
I would like to thank both Ian Baines, VE3DJI
and Steve Canney, VA3SC for their help in
informing me of this sad news.
Finbar O'Connor
EI0CF Malin, County Donegal.
March 19, 2011
marks the two year anniversary of the death of ODXA
Chairman Brian Smith. He is missed by all who knew him.

Bad news. Paul Goliboski is going to be tied
up helping David Ross at the Brampton Ham Flea Market and Scott
Guthrie's wife will not be
returning from Africa until March 24th. With the confirmed attendance
at the March Shadow Lake reduced to the level that the cost will become
prohibitive, especially for someone on a pension like me, I have
decided to cancel our reservation for that weekend. And, since I have
no other available weekend in March or April, the spring Shadow Lake
Radio Camp is hereby cancelled.
I am booking the camp for the weekend of November 9th to 11th which,
like last year, is the weekend after the clocks change and two weeks
after the B12 broadcast season starts.
I'm sorry for this sad turn of events but we simply don't have the same
interest in the hobby like we did a few years ago when we were getting
between 8 and 10 people out twice a year.
